IMG_0870YUMA — The Cochise College baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader at Arizona Western on Tuesday, falling in the early game 2-1 and the late game 3-1.

In game one, starting pitcher Steve Naemark went the complete seven innings for the Apaches and allowed just four walks and two hits while striking out seven.

At the plate, Cochise’s bats were quiet with only two hits in the game. The Apaches scored late, on a groundout by Darick Hall to score Jason Sanez in the seventh inning.

In game two, Hall took the loss on the mound for Cochise. He went 5 1/3 innings, walked none, struck out two and allowed three runs on seven hits.

The Matadors scored one in the fifth, and Cochise tied it in the top of the sixth with an RBI single by Jayson Hicks that scored Jake Luna. Arizona Western responded in the bottom of the inning with two runs and held on for the win.

Luna and Hicks were the only Cochise players with multiple hits and the team totaled eight hits in the game.

The losses drop Cochise to 15-14 overall this season. The Apaches have a full week of games, facing Langley Blaze of British Columbia in a doubleheader Wednesday starting at 1 p.m. at Salt River Fields in Phoenix, followed by a single game against the Blaze on Friday at 6 p.m. in Phoenix. Cochise resumes conference play Saturday with a noon doubleheader against Gateway Community College, to be played at South Mountain.

Cochise returns home Tuesday for a noon doubleheader against Chandler-Gilbert. Admission is free to all regular-season home games.
