As the Cochise baseball team continues its climb through the losers bracket this week in the JUCO World Series, the Apaches now face the top team in the country, Spartanburg Methodist of South Carolina, in this afternoon’s elimination game.

Spartanburg dropped to the losers bracket after falling Wednesday night to Central Alabama, 10-5. The Pioneers put up 36 combined runs in their first two games of the bracket before being held to a close game by Neosho on Tuesday night.

“I’ve seen Spartanburg play a couple of times,” said Cochise head coach Todd Inglehart. “They’re very physical, very good. But I think our pitchers, whoever we throw, will be fine. I’m not worried about our pitchers against people’s hitters.”

Today’s game starts a 3 p.m. MST (2 p.m. AZ time). The winner has a chance to move on to the championship game, depending on the outcome of the Central Alabama-Palm Beach game to be played tonight.

“What will be the difference is our offensive production,” Inglehart said. “If we swing it, it could be a pretty special game.”
