DOUGLAS — The Cochise College soccer team kicks off its season this weekend on the road at Mofford Sports Complex against Gateway Community College. The Apaches return to the Douglas Campus for their home opener Thursday, Aug. 28, against Scottsdale Community College.

Cochise returns five key players from last year’s squad that finished 12-10 overall and took third in the Region I tournament. It was the Apaches’ 12th appearance in the region playoffs since the program’s inception in 1998 and their highest finish in the region since 2006.

Leading the squad will be sophomores Brooke Madden, Naiara Sanchez, Ivonne Cisneros, Mariel Hundley and Brittany Melvin. Cisneros tied the school record twice last year for assists in one game, with three against both Gateway on Aug. 31 and South Mountain on Sept. 21. She earned Arizona Community College Athletic Conference recognition with an honorable mention award last season.

Filling out the Apache roster is a wealth of freshman talent, hailing from Arizona, Texas, Nevada, Utah and California.
