Hopes and enthusiasm are high as the 2014-15 season begins. The Cochise College women’s basketball team look to build on the success of previous teams who have averaged 20 wins per season in the last three years coached by Laura Hughes.

The 2012-13 Apaches achieved many firsts for the women’s basketball program. The 26 wins recorded were the most ever in school history and the team advanced to the championship game of the NJCAA Division I Region. Over the past two years, the Apaches have sent all 10 sophomores on to four-year universities on basketball scholarships.

With many new faces joining returning sophomores, the 2014-15 season under Hughes, in her fourth year at the helm of the program, promises to be exciting. Destiny Amezquita, the freshman conference player of the year, and Te Oramae Solomon are expected to provide strong leadership for the Apaches.

“A few things are guaranteed: this team will always work hard, play together and represent Cochise College in a positive manner,” Hughes said.

The 2014-15 season will bring a tough and demanding schedule. Non-conference teams from Texas and Wyoming will provide a good challenge for the Lady Apaches. The Arizona Community College Athletic Conference is once again a premier league in the NJCAA. Nationally ranked teams from the ACCAC appear on both the NJCAA Division I and Division II polls.

The season opens at home Sunday, Nov. 2, against Spire Academy, followed by Tuesday, Nov. 4, against Arizona Christian. The Apaches’ non-conference schedule opens on the road at Arizona Western on Nov. 11.
