Holocaust survivor Walter Feiger will travel from Tucson to the Sierra Vista and Douglas Campuses to speak this semester. He will be at the Sierra Vista Campus from noon to 1 p.m. Monday, March 26, in the Student Union Community Room to speak about his experiences during the Holocaust. Three weeks later, Feiger will be at the Douglas Campus to give his presentation from 11 a.m. to noon Monday, April 16, at the Little Theatre.

Melanie and Nadine Tschida look at the art exhibit on display at the El Paso Holocaust Museum earlier this semester.

Feiger’s trip to Cochise College was spearheaded by Honors 140 students who are learning “History and Lessons of the Holocaust.” Their honors project in the works for the class this semester consists of making presentations at area public schools about discrimination and bullying to help explain the history of the Holocaust.

“Hopefully this message will have people thinking twice about bullying, and help advocate no bullying or prejudice in schools,” said Cochise student Nadine Tschida. “That’s the survivors’ goal, too. They’re happy we’re doing this project, because they want future generations to remember.”

In previous years, Holocaust projects have been based primarily at the Douglas campus of Cochise College. This year, interested Sierra Vista students helped it branch out. Tschida said it’s a big step to be able to bring Feiger, who survived multiple work camps and concentration camps during the Holocaust, to both campuses.

This semester’s students are also continuing the Penny Project, with the goal to collect 1.5 million pennies in memory of the 1.5 million children who died during the Holocaust. Tschida said a donation location is established at Village Meadows Elementary School in Sierra Vista, and donation buckets will be available during Feiger’s presentations at the college in Douglas and Sierra Vista.

The presentations are coordinated by Cochise College’s Student Government Associations and Phi Theta Kappa, and the events are free and open to the public. For more information, call 417-4012.
