Cochise College choral and instrumental ensembles will present concerts at a wide array of venues in Cochise County before the end of the fall semester.
In late November, the Cochise College High Desert Singers, under the direction of Dave Perry, will present A Candlelight Christmas in a joint concert with the Note-ables, a community women’s chorus. This festive celebration also includes the music of Thunder Mountain Brass and the Giocoso, a recorder ensemble. Interspersed throughout the evening will be readings and poetry of the season, narrated by Dinah McCreery and Roger Bayes.
A Candlelight Christmas is set for 7 p.m., with doors opening at 6:30, on two nights, Thursday, Nov. 29 and Friday, Nov. 30 at the Sierra Vista United Methodist Church sanctuary. On Dec. 2, the Cochise College Concert band will hold its final performance of the semester at 2 p.m. at the Ethel Berger Center. The concert band, under the direction of Brad Gallant, will perform a mix of traditional concert band pieces, some jazz, pop and rock favorites, and a few favorite holiday tunes.
The Cochise College Women’s Ensemble and the Nuevo Mundo Quartet will present “Ave,” featuring holiday music from the 12th to 20th centuries, on Dec. 10. The concert includes A Ceremony of Carols by Benjamin Britten, music by Victoria, Josquin and Garcia de Mendoza, and a Sonoran Seri Lullaby, among other early works.
This joint performance begins at 7 p.m. at the University of Arizona South Folklore Center at Ramsey Canyon and benefits the Cochise College music department scholarship fund. The center holds a maximum audience of 50 people, and limited parking is available. Call (520) 515-8759 to reserve a seat for this concert.
On Dec. 13, the Cochise College Jazz Band will perform its semester concert at 7 p.m. at the Cochise College Sierra Vista Campus in the Student Union, under the direction of Mike Kuhn.
The semester’s concerts conclude with Tonadilla de Gracia, which brings together the college’s Bi-national Chorus, Douglas and Sierra Vista Instrumental Ensembles and the Women’s Ensemble to present villancicos, carols, songs and assorted pieces to place you in the holiday spirit.
You’ll also hear music from the New World as well as old favorites at this celebrative event, presented at two locations, the first at 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 15 at the Douglas Government Center, then at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 16 at the Bisbee Central School Project.
