Cochise County high school students at Cochise College’s Meet Your Major.

Choosing a college major is one of the most difficult decisions students will face in their academic careers. That’s why Cochise College hosted Meet Your Major, an event that helps high school and college students learn about the wide array of available career programs located close to home and find the direction that’s best suited for them.

Over 215 high school students signed up for the event this Wednesday on the Cochise College Douglas Campus.

Students visited with Department of Public Safety, Border Patrol, National Park Rangers and other local employers.

Different Cochise College Departments showcased the advantages available to students, including more than 100 degree programs and many career and technical certification programs. Students visited with aviation, welding, agriculture/equine and many of Cochise College’s majors.

Students also met with various universities in Arizona. Cochise has strong links to the University of Arizona — through Cochise Cats and the UA South campus right next door to Cochise’s Sierra Vista Campus — as well as Arizona State University through Point ASU transfer agreements, and several other four-year universities.

“We are trying to make a connection between the majors that we have here at Cochise College and the careers that they can turn into in the future,” said Norma Brandenburg, an Academic Advisor at Cochise College. “So students can see the connection between what they are studying and future careers that are available to them.”

Many Cochise College students from TRIO, Phi Theta Kappa and the Cochise College Student Government volunteered at the event to help show their support to future students.

The Vice President of Literature for PTK said, “For the Meet Your Major event, I’ve seen a lot of students who are looking for something to do after high school. Meet Your Major has been a great opportunity for students to see what’s out there, and it helps them find opportunities to gain experience, to find internships and also helps them see what they can do with their majors.”
