Cochise College vocalists and musicians will present the performances they’ve practiced this semester during concerts scheduled early in December.
Choral Ensembles and Strings: In Dulci Jubilo
Cochise College’s choral ensembles and chamber string group will put on two performances of In Dulci Jubilo, a free holiday concert, in December.
Internationally known soprano Melanie Germond directs the Cochise College Chamber Choir, and Dr. Lori Keyne, director of Cochise College music programs, leads the acclaimed Bi-National Chorus, in ancient to modern holiday sacred music featuring Vivaldi, Distler, Gorecki, Pärt, Victoria, Gounod, Biebl, Corelli and Buxtehude, as well as Latin American colonial Christmas works.
Old- and new-world favorites celebrate the holiday spirit, with concerts at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 2 at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, 11th Street and D Avenue, Douglas, and at 7 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 6 at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church, 800 Taylor Drive, Sierra Vista. Faculty Recital
Dr. Jay Kuh, Cochise College associate faculty in voice and theater, in conjunction with voice student Young Ernst, presents a free recital at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 4 at Kino Hall at St. Andrew the Apostle Church, 800 Taylor Drive in Sierra Vista. Admission is free.
Kuh studied at Chung-Ang University in Seoul, Korea; the Cleveland Institute of Music in Ohio; and the University of Arizona. He has performed with the Arizona Opera Company, Cleveland Institute of Music Opera Theatre, and the University of Arizona Opera Theatre. He received first place in the National Association of Teachers of Singing Vocal Competition in Ohio and Arizona, and the Cleveland Singers Club Vocal Competition in Cleveland, and second place in the Opera Guild Vocal Competition in Southern Arizona. He is a guest artist with The Poland Chopin Symphony Orchestra and guest vocal lecturer with The Contemporary Music Academy in Seoul, Korea.
Band and Jazz Ensemble: Holiday Favorites and Band Literature
Cochise College’s Band and Jazz Ensemble will present a free holiday concert highlighting band literature at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 5.
Director Mike Kuhn leads the concert band at the Holy Trinity Monastery in St. David to present Christmas and holiday favorites and a highlight of band literature, including “Lithuanian Rhapsody,” “Bless this House,” and “Italian Festival.”
The Jazz Ensemble will perform swing standards, including “Sentimental Journey” and modern jazz classics, including Herbie Hancock’s “Watermelon Man.” Many of the jazz band’s members will be featured in improvisational roles.
