DOUGLAS – In the midst of a tough two-game home stand, the Cochise College women’s soccer team still found a few minutes to travel to Valley View Elementary School last Friday morning to hang out with sixth, seventh and eighth graders.
“Our team does a great job with the kids and we devote the majority of our community service with the youth,” said Cochise head coach Andrea Daniels. “We look forward to visiting other schools in Cochise County.”
A day prior, the Apaches won a game against Phoenix College 4-0, a crucial victory to keep Cochise’s postseason hopes alive. The top six teams in the conference make the playoffs, and the Apaches are sitting at eighth.
Against Phoenix, Franciele Bonfanti scored first for Cochise off an assist from Kayla Davis. Alicia Barrett scored twice in the game, once off a header, and the final goal came from Juliana Alves Da Silva.
“The girls played with a lot of heart and passion,” Daniels said. “I was very proud of their work rate.”
Lately, Cochise lost 5-1 to Chandler-Gilbert on Monday afternoon to put the Apaches’ record at 5-9-1 overall with four scheduled games left, as well as a makeup game against Paradise Valley that was rained out earlier this season.
“They came out strong and were able to put away four goals early,” Daniels said of Chandler-Gilbert. “We responded with a nice goal from Ellyn Dunn, but were not able to rally back.”
Next, the Apaches head to Mesa on Thursday for a 4:30 p.m. game before returning home next week against Gateway on Monday and South Mountain on Oct. 20. Both games are at 3:30 p.m. and admission is free.
“We are still in competition for the playoffs, and we have our eyes set on making them.”
