PHOENIX – The Cochise College men’s basketball team finished with a sweep of its three games at the Phoenix Tournament this week, closing with a 107-70 victory over Illinois Central on Friday.
The Apaches (12-2) held the lead at halftime in all three games in the tournament on the way to wins. Cochise’s winning streak now sits at nine games and the squad is receiving votes in the latest NJCAA Division I Top 20 national poll.
Against Illinois Central, sophomore Nathan Sobey led the squad with 24 points. Matt Korcheck had 18 points and six rebounds. Ajak Magot and Nnamdi Ezenwa each added 16 points and eight rebounds. Michael Maya had 14 points and Mark Simmons added eight assists.
In the opening two games of the Phoenix Tournament, Cochise won 86-61 over Highline Community College (Wash.) on Wednesday and 94-80 against Westwind Prep on Thursday.
Against Westwind Prep, Magot, Sobey and Maya each led the team in scoring with 19 points apiece. Simmons added 11 points and eight assists. It was the Apaches’ second win over Westwind Prep this season.
Against Highline, Sobey again led Cochise in scoring with 29 points on the night. Maya added 18 points, Ezenwa had 13 and Korcheck finished with 11. Simmons added nine assists.
Cochise looks to continue its streak Wednesday at home against Pima Community College. The Cochise women, who lost at David Monthan Air Force Base on Thursday, 55-46, play Pima at 5:30 p.m. and the men tip off at 7:30.
