Cochise College women’s soccer won a thrilling contest against #10 Pima College Aztecs (National Ranking in the latest DII NJCAA Women’s Soccer Coaches’ Top 20 Poll). The scoreboard showed 0-0 up until the 64th minute when Apaches’ Maria Azarias from Santa Catarina, Brazil, opened the score. The lead did not last for too long and was countered by Aztecs’ Emma Franzone, who tied the game in the 70th minute. The match turned into a back-and-forth battle. Pima took the lead 2-1 in the 73rd minute. A few minutes later, Kayla Reynaud from Las Cruces, NM, hit the driven ball from 35 yards out to equal the match 2-2. Aztecs took the lead again in the 87th minute. However, Sofia Gallegos from Chihuahua, Mexico, acrobatically struck the ball to chip the keeper in the 89th minute to force overtime.
The first overtime period featured shots from both teams with a few scoring opportunities on each side. Cochise College pulled the win five minutes into the second overtime with a great team mindset and effort when Azarias scored again to win the game for the Apaches.
The win puts Cochise College at 1-1 in ACCAC.
