The Cochise College Soccer team hosted Arizona Western College in the ACCAC Division I contest Thursday afternoon.

The Apaches were looking to improve their record against rival Matadors.

Daniela Gomez, a freshman from Cali, Columbia, opened the score in the 29th minute after a corner kick. The ball was played towards the edge of the 6-yard box. Maria Azarias, a sophomore from Santa Catarina, Brazil headed the ball towards Samantha Renteria, a freshman from Rio Rico, Ariz. The ball deflected to Gomez, who muscled the ball into the net. Goalkeeper Brianna Guzman, a sophomore from Douglas, Ariz., made a couple of important saves that kept the Apaches in the lead. The first half ended 1-0 for Cochise.

The second half opened with early pressure from the Apaches. Cochise eventually broke through a few minutes later, scoring the game’s second goal near the 55-minute mark. Azarias received a through ball from Clara Steffensen, a freshman from Hvidovre, Denmark, and comfortably finished making it 2-0. It seemed like the game will end in the Apaches’ favor, but the Matadors did not give up. Matadors’ Stacey Papadopoulus countered to 2-1 in the 78th minute. The late equalizer came in the 86th minute to force the overtime.

The first overtime was getting close to an end when Matadors managed to win the match by scoring in the 99th minute to make it 3-2.

The loss drops Cochise College Soccer to 3-2 in ACCAC.
