DOUGLAS — After suffering their first loss of the season on Saturday, the Cochise College women’s basketball team jumped on top of visiting Eastern Arizona College by 20 points in the first seven minutes, led by 24 at the break and never looked back in an 82-63 win on Wednesday night.
Johnishia Welles led five Apaches in double figures with 18 points, followed by Yvonte Neal with 16, Ashley Mitchell with 12, and Jasmine Lemon and Tianna Brown with 10 each.
“We responded well to the loss to Mesa,” Cochise head coach Laura Hughes said. “We’re working on putting teams away in the second half, but we played well on offense and took care of the ball pretty well.”
The Apaches, 9-1 overall, play at Tohono O’odham on Saturday and are at Scottsdale on Wednesday.

DOUGLAS — The Cochise College men continued to have little trouble with some of the top Division I teams in the ACCAC, beating Eastern Arizona College on Wednesday 96-85.
Despite the win, head coach Jerry Carrillo wasn’t entirely pleased with his team’s effort.
“I thought our defensive energy was the poorest we’ve played all year,” he said. “But our team has a belief we can win.”
Joe Bell Austin led the way with 20 points, Demeco Blue scored 16 and Jordan Russell 14 for the Apaches, who sit at 9-1 overall heading into games Saturday at Tohono O’odham and Wednesday at Scottsdale.
