DOUGLAS — The Cochise College baseball team’s winning streak was snapped Saturday against Yavapai College, with the Apaches falling 11-6 in game one of the doubleheader, but bouncing back to win game two 12-5.
In Cochise’s win, the teams traded leads through the first four innings until Yavapai’s bats were silenced through the rest of the game. Frank Salas led the Apaches at the plate, going 4 for 5 with two RBIs and scoring three runs. Jake Luna was 2 for 3 with three RBIs.
Salas started for Cochise and went the first 3 1/3 innings before he was relieved by Kevin Dorantes, who pitched the last 5 2/3 for the win. Dorantes gave up no runs, walked one and struck out eight.
In game one, Yavapai jumped on top early with four runs in the first inning. Cochise plated two in the third, but Yavapai tacked on one in the fifth and six in the seventh before the Apaches managed four in the bottom of the seventh and final inning.
Jacob Potts took the loss for Cochise. The sophomore went 6 1/3 innings and gave up eight runs on nine hits and six walks while striking out four. Roy Aguirre came on in relief for the last 2/3 inning. At the plate, Nate Hale and Salas each had two hits for Cochise.
The split against Yavapai puts Cochise’s record at 34-10 overall and 20-6 in conference games heading into Tuesday’s doubleheader at South Mountain.
