Cochise College is set to host its annual Creative Writing Celebration on Friday, April 5, 2024, at the Sierra Vista Campus Library in the Horace Steele room 909. The public is invited to join the literary festivities that include two writing contests catering to adults and young writers alike.

Adult Writing Contest

The Adult Writing Contest offers three categories—poetry, short story (fiction), and memoir (nonfiction).

Entry submissions to the contest are free of charge and limited to three poems per person, and fiction or memoir pieces should be at most 2,500 words. The winners in each category can win cash prizes—$ 200 for first place, $100 for second place, and $50 for third place. Additionally, winning entries will be published in Cochise College’s literary magazine, The Mirage. The submission deadline is Friday, March 15, 2024.

Event co-director Dani Foti stated in an email, “We are thrilled to breathe new life into the Creative Writing Celebration, starting with this multifaceted Writing Contest. It’s an honor to spotlight talent in Cochise County, and we look forward to seeing what the community of writers and storytellers delivers.”

Kids Writing Contest

In collaboration with the Copper Queen library, the Kids Writing Contest is a dedicated platform for young writers in grades K-12 within Cochise County. This initiative aims to nurture creativity from an early age.

The guidelines are one entry per person, with a maximum word count of 200 words. The contest is divided into three categories by grade: K-5, 6-8, and 9-12. Aspiring young authors must submit their work by Friday, March 15, 2024.

Entries for both contests are accepted via email only at writingcontest@cochise.edu.
