Jonathan Sigona, a 20-year-old student, uncovered his true passion for mathematics along the way while attending Cochise College. 
Unlike many who plan to attend college right after high school, Sigona took two years to explore his interests and aspirations. Little did he know that the world of mathematics would inspire him to continue his education, and Cochise College was there to help him every step of the way.
The decision to enroll at Cochise College was logical for Sigona, given its proximity to Sierra Vista, his hometown. The cost-effectiveness of attending Cochise allowed him to explore the college experience without overwhelming financial commitments and providing him the flexibility to navigate potential career paths.
His joy and curiosity for numbers and their practical applications steered him toward declaring mathematics as his major—a decision cultivated since high school.
For Sigona, pursuing a college education was more than a personal pursuit. It’s the initial step toward finding a way to impact others through the lens of mathematics.
Nevertheless, the experience was not without challenges. Social anxieties Sigona had since childhood presented obstacles that he knew he had to overcome. In response, he proactively immersed himself in the college community. He worked at the college library and joined various campus clubs. Backed by a supportive faculty and other students, Cochise College was the catalyst that helped him.
Reflecting, Signona shares, “Cochise College has been instrumental in my academic and personal development. The support I’ve received has been crucial, and I’m confident that others can find the same encouragement here.”
Looking ahead, Sigona aspires to become a statistician in the environmental industry. The staff at Cochise College have been more than just educators to Sigona. They have been mentors who guided him to become a proficient researcher, writer and an overall better student. The collaborative support from library staff and faculty, especially as a student aide, has instilled in him the confidence to pursue ambitious goals.
