SIERRA VISTA — Haunted Union 2011 is a free event open to the public, as well as students, held at the Sierra Vista Campus of Cochise College on Friday, Oct. 28.

The event is sponsored by the Student Government Association of Sierra Vista and is open from 6 to 10 p.m. throughout the Student Union. It will include a haunted house, activities and games for children, food, music, costume contests and more.

“It’s not just for college students,” said Sierra Vista Campus Student Government sophomore president Tonya Pike. “We have stuff for all different age groups, and it’s definitely a safer place to bring younger children because it’s a controlled environment. Even though it’s not on Halloween night, it’s still something fun to do for Halloween.”

The college has hosted a gathering for Halloween for the past few years, but the Haunted Union started up just last year after the new Student Union was built on campus. This year’s haunted house will feature all new spooks, and more clubs are involved with new games for the event, which combines club fundraising with community service.

“If you bring canned food to the event, we give you tickets back to use within the Haunted Union,” Pike said. “Tickets are used as our medium of exchange. So you buy tickets from SGA, and each club has their own game that will cost a certain amount of tickets to play. That’s a way for clubs to fundraise.”

The more canned food items you bring to be donated to local shelters, the more tickets you’ll get back. Or you can just purchase tickets with regular cash and coins.

The Cochise Dance Club is also set to perform the famous dance from Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” music video at the event. To join in and learn the dance, stop by the club’s meeting, held every Wednesday at 5 p.m. in room 705 on the Sierra Vista Campus.
