DOUGLAS — The Cochise College women’s soccer team defeated Phoenix College on Tuesday night 2-1.
The Apaches battled back from a 1-0 halftime deficit. In the 61st minute, Jennifer Calanche evened the score with an assist by Hallie Kolodetsky. In the 82nd minute, Talya De Leon followed up her own shot, which was bobbled by Phoenix’s goalie, and scored left-footed to give the Apaches the lead, and Cochise held on for the victory.
“I am very proud of the girls,” said Cochise head coach Andrea Daniels. “This team we saw against Phoenix is we had been waiting for. Every player played for each other and battled for 90 minutes hard.”
Cochise totaled eight shots to Phoenix’s six and goalie Danielle Dunn made six saves for the Apaches, who improved their record to 4-2.
Next, Cochise travels to Scottsdale on Thursday before returning home for a 7 p.m. matchup against Mesa on Saturday at Douglas High School. Next week, the Apaches host Arizona Western at 2 p.m. Sept. 18 on Fort Huachuca’s Bujalski Track and Field Complex, next to Barnes Field House.
“This team has a strong fight and vision,” Daniels said. “These next two games will be important for us. Currently, we are third in the conference and we want to maintain that position and move past second and first. The girls are determined and I believe they have the ability to reach this goal.”
