DOUGLAS — The Cochise College music department is proud to present “Desvariaciones de la Canción Mexicana” at the Douglas Campus Little Theatre at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 30.
This show features two Mexican musicians’ original work that focuses on issues of illegal immigration, with a sense of humor.
Actress and singer Verania Luzero plays the role of “La Madre Patria” and narrates the story of an illegal immigrant who crosses the border, searching for the American Dream. The plot pokes fun at Mexican culture while illustrating the levels of culture shock the immigrant goes through while becoming acclimated to being a Mexican-American.
The hour-long show utilizes popular songs from the Mexican contemporary repertoire arranged with a touch of American music, accompanied by pianist Hector Acosta.
“I’m excited about offering this, as the music that will be presented is Mexican regional music as well as music derived from jazz and the blues,” said Cochise College music instructor Lori Keyne.
Actress and singer Lucero is in her senior year at the University of Sonora’s drama school. She’s performed in plays, films, festivals and with bands across Mexico.
Acosta earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in piano performance at the University of Arizona, where he studied under Professor Nicholas Zumbro and Dr. Paula Fan. He’s employed full time at the University of Sonora School of Music as a director and accompanist.
Anyone needing an accommodation in order to attend should contact the Office of Disability Services, (520) 515-5337 or (520) 417-4023, at least 72 hours in advance.
