Cochise College is excited to announce its 2024 National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development (NISOD) Excellence Award Winners. The awards highlight the exceptional work of staff. The recipients were nominated for their service to students, their department, the college, and their communities. Recipients are Angelita (Angie) Bustamante, director of TriO student support services at the Douglas Campus and Joel Evans, MOS credentialing coordinator at the Fort Huachuca Center.

Angie Bustamante

Bustamante recently became the director of TriO. Before becoming the director, she served as an academic and career advisor. She has significantly contributed to the program’s growth. She is passionate about supporting and empowering students to overcome challenges and achieve their goals. Over the years, her innovative approach and ideas have increased graduation and transfer rates. Her dedication to the program, students, and the college is an outstanding example of creating a sense of belonging. In addition, Bustamante volunteers as a Phi Theta Kappa advisor and actively collaborates with other departments, clubs and committees. She advocates for academic excellence and student success and has guided and mentored many students who have been recognized as All Arizona Academic recipients and Jack Kent Cooke semifinalists.

Joel Evans

Over the 23 years of working at Cochise College, Evans continues to shine in his service to the college, students and community. He started as a part-time employee at the college and is currently the MOS coordinator. In this role, he coordinates 47 different Army courses across four states, ensuring the credentialing program runs smoothly. Additionally, Evans serves as the board president for Premier Alliances and volunteers with the Tombstone Booster Club and the Sierra Vista Methodist Food Pantry.

“I feel honored and humbled to be receiving the NISOD award. I have always had someone at the college believe and push me to do greater things even when I thought I couldn’t,” Evans said. “That’s why I work at the college: to help students succeed and work as a team player at the Fort Huachuca Center.”

Their peers have selected Bustamante and Evans. As recipients, they will receive their awards during NISOD’s Conference held in Texas in May.
