SIERRA VISTA — The Cochise Community Creative Writing Celebration has announced its 2014 workshop presenters.
The annual celebration brings published writers in several genres to present hands-on workshops to aspiring writers from the community. The 2014 celebration is March 28-29, with Friday’s events at the Ethel Berger Center and Saturday at the Cochise College Sierra Vista Campus.
This year, fiction writer Ann Garvin will be the celebration’s keynote speaker. She is the author of “On Maggie’s Watch” and “The Dog Year.” Her workshop will cover “How To Write A Synopsis that Publishers Can’t Resist.” Also presenting at this year’s celebration is Erec Toso, who teaches writing at the University of Arizona. His first memoir, “Zero at the Bone — Rewriting Life After a Snakebite,” was selected as one of the Southwest Books of the Year in 2007.
Mark Bailey and Kirsten Allen of Torrey House Press will also present a workshop, “Getting off the Slush Pile,” at the celebration for writers looking for answers about the publishing process. Rounding out this year’s presenters is poet James Jay, whose latest book of poems, “The Journeymen,” was nominated for a PEN Western States Award and a Before Columbus Foundation Award. Jay lives in Flagstaff and owns a bar, Uptown Billiards, with his wife, Alyson.
Also included each year in the celebration is a writing contest, with cash prizes. First-place winners of the Creative Writing Celebration’s writing contest have their work published in Mirage, Cochise College’s literary and arts magazine. The celebration is co-sponsored by Cochise College, University South Foundation, Inc., Cochise College Foundation’s Diane E. Freund Memorial Writing Celebration Fund, and the City of Sierra Vista Leisure and Library Services, with support from other community businesses and organizations.
