DOUGLAS — Hundreds of people were at the Cochise College Douglas Campus on March 28 during its inaugural Meet Your Major event in conjunction with the second annual Aviation Open House.
The events offered a chance for students and members of the public to find out all of the opportunities available at Cochise County’s only community college.
“We were expecting 190 students (at Meet Your Major),” said Diana Davila of the college’s Human Resources department. “In attendance were 246 high school students and their counselors, 10 Department of Justice/Public Service vendors, 15 college departments, 10 universities and 1 outside vendor. We are planning this to be an annual event.”
The Aviation department hosted a similar Open House event last spring. This year’s event offered area community members information about careers in aviation, a chance to explore the fleet of aircrafts and a meet-and-greet with pilots, as well as hands-on experience by taking a spin in the flight simulator.
This year’s aviation event also included an added bonus to those who signed up early: an introductory flight at a special rate of $64. Eleven people took advantage of the opportunity to fly in the sky for a half hour.
This summer, the college’s airport runway is scheduled to temporarily cease operations during a runway rehabilitation project, thanks to a $1.71 million grant from the Arizona Department of Transportation. With significant growth happening in aviation at the college, the inside of the aviation department’s building will also be receiving a facelift, along with renovations to the art building.
