PHOENIX – Despite only 11 healthy players and injuries leaving no substitutes, the Cochise College women’s soccer team scored three in the second half Thursday on the way to a 4-1 rout of South Mountain.
The Apaches scored their first goal halfway through the first half, with freshman Franciele Bonfanti netting the ball on a slide kick with an assist from sophomore Kayla Davis. South Mountain scored its only goal after Cochise gave away a penalty kick, tying it 1-1 at the break.
Despite halftime being the only few minutes of stopped play for the healthy Apaches who took the field, they came out even stronger in the second half.
“This game went really well for us,” said Cochise head coach Andrea Daniels. “The girls played with a lot of heart and passion. I was very proud of their hard work.”
The Apaches’ go-ahead goal came when sophomore Kristina Hernandez’s corner kick set up a header for Davis. Minutes later, Davis scored on her own after beating a South Mountain defender on a one-on-one and burying the ball into the net.
Cochise’s final goal started with Bonfanti crossing opposite side to Briana Lopez, who crossed it back in for Juliana Alves Da Silva to finish off.
Cochise is now 3-6-1 overall this season and 2-6 in conference games heading into Saturday’s game against Glendale, set for 2:30 p.m. at the Douglas Campus. The Apaches are at home for three straight games before heading to Pima on Oct. 4.
