DOUGLAS – The Cochise College women’s soccer team nearly pulled off an upset against visiting conference foe Scottsdale Community College on Thursday.

The Apaches, still short players due to injuries, fell in extra time 2-1 to the Artichokes, who scored with 30 seconds left in overtime to run their winning streak to 10 games this season.

“Scottsdale is undefeated in conference and have never been behind in anyone of their games,” said Cochise head coach Andrea Daniels. “So I’m very proud of the girls and the fight they put up.”

Cochise, playing with just one reserve, had Scottsdale out of its comfort zone early by taking the lead in the first half. The Apaches had three players crashing the goal, waiting for a cross from freshman Franciele Bonfanti, and sophomore Alicia Barrett’s touch put it in the back of the net.

Scottsdale tied it in the second half, and Cochise’s short list of players were seconds away from holding off the Artichokes until the end and sending the game to a shootout.

The Apaches face Pima on the road early this week, then return home for two games against Phoenix College and Chandler-Gilbert.
