The Cochise College baseball team traveled to Phoenix to play South Mountain Community College on Tuesday, April 13. In the first game of the doubleheader, Freshman RHP Treyjen Meza started for the Apaches. Meza took the loss for Cochise but turned in a solid outing giving Cochise a chance to win. Meza gave the Apaches six strong innings of work, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out six South Mountain batters. Cochise went down early in the first inning but got it all squared with a run of their own in the third. South Mountain pushed another runner across to make it 2-1 and held on to win the game. Hernan Yanez had two hits for the Apaches and led the Cochise offense.
In the second game of the doubleheader, Cochise controlled most of the game but found themselves on the wrong end, losing 4-3. The Apaches turned the ball to Freshman RHP Mason Piert for the start. Piert gave the Apaches 2.2 innings of work, allowing three hits and no runs. Cochise got on the scoreboard first with two runs in the second inning from a bases-loaded single played two by Aaron Marsh. Marsh led the Apaches with two hits in the ball game. Cochise would plate another run in the third inning, making the score 3-0. Jose Velazquez came into relief for Piert and did a good job keeping the Apaches ahead 3-1 before coming out of the game. South Mountain plated three runs in the bottom of the seventh, making it 4-3, which would be the game’s ending score.
