Arizona Capitol Times announced the 2021 Leaders of the Year. Among these is J.D. Rottweiler, Ph.D., president of Cochise College and past chair of the Arizona Community College Coordinating Council.

According to the Arizona Capitol Times website, the award recognizes the “men, women and organizations that have contributed greatly to the growth of our state.”

Dr. J.D. Rottweiler serves as the president of Cochise College and, most recently, the past chair of the Arizona Community College Coordinating Council. Over the years, Dr. Rottweiler has been a true leader of higher education in Arizona and has demonstrated initiative, dedication to student success, and advocacy for Arizona’s Community Colleges. His vision to inspire passion and purpose is genuinely valued, and he is a leader among peers.

His leadership extends beyond the college and Cochise County by implementing renewed academic programming in law enforcement, cybersecurity, automotive, agriculture, and healthcare.

Dr. Rottweiler’s commitment to student success, the success of our community and Arizona community colleges is a significant priority. He focuses on closing the percentage gap of young people who are neither enrolled in school or working (opportunity youth). Collaborations with local, county and state officials have yielded impactful results in post-secondary education and training, workforce development and students attending college.

Students joined Dr. Rottweiler in Phoenix for a day of shadowing Arizona lawmakers. Through his mentorship, students participated in legislative visits, saw firsthand what goes on in a typical working day at the state legislature, and learned how senators and representatives impact community colleges. In addition, Dr. Rottweiler joined Arizona’s ten community college districts to participate in A Taste of Community College. There he provided a presentation highlighting how funds will be used and illustrated the tremendous economic benefits to Cochise County.

“As a leader in higher education, you work tirelessly on building relationships, supporting students and celebrating their success. It is why we are here,” Dr. Rottweiler said upon receiving the honor. “I am fortunate to partner with innovative colleagues who put student success first.”

He added, “These outstanding finalists represent many exemplary leaders throughout Arizona. I congratulate them on their nomination and well-deserved recognition.”
