Cochise College and Wayland Baptist University have inked an articulation agreement that provides a framework for students who wish to transfer their credits and pursue bachelor’s degrees in a broad array of academic areas.

The agreement allows Cochise College students who have completed associate degrees to transfer up to a total of 72 credit hours toward a Wayland Baptist University bachelor’s degree. Wayland Baptist will also accept up to 12 credits for four years of documented full-time work experience, meaning it is possible for a student to enter Wayland Baptist with 84 credits toward a bachelor’s degree. Students will work with advisors at both Cochise College and Wayland Baptist to plan an appropriate course of study.

To qualify, students must have completed an associate degree at Cochise College; students who have not earned a degree will be evaluated on a course-by-course basis.

About 50 people representing both institutions attended a signing ceremony at the Sierra Vista Campus of Cochise College Jan. 21. Dr. Elane Seebo, Wayland Baptist vice president of external campuses and graduate studies, and Dr. J.D. Rottweiler, president of Cochise College, pointed out the importance of partnerships to higher education.

“Never in history have the services we provide been more important to the well-being of our students, our communities, our state, our region, our nation, and, realistically, the world as a whole,” Rottweiler said. “We have seen phenomenal growth at Cochise College, and we recognize that change is directly linked to our ability to provide opportunities for our students beyond Cochise College.”

The need for baccalaureate-prepared individuals continues to increase, Rottweiler said, but it has to increase at the same time that students are working, living their lives, raising families, and facing all of the challenges of life today.

“In this day and age, when partnerships are the lifeblood of higher education, partnerships between community colleges and universities have become ever more critical,” Seebo said. “I am delighted to be here today to formalize a partnership that’s existed for such a long time.”

Cochise College provides general and technical education leading to a variety of certificates and associate degrees online and at locations in Sierra Vista/Fort Huachuca, Douglas, Willcox, Benson and Nogales.

Wayland Baptist University headquarters is in Texas, and the institution also has locations in Sierra Vista/Fort Huachuca and Tucson. The university serves a number of military communities and is able to help students who have earned credit at multiple institutions consolidate their experience into one degree plan.
