YUMA — The Cochise College women’s basketball team remained unbeaten on the season after two wins over the weekend at the Thanksgiving Tournament hosted by Arizona Western College.

The Apaches defeated CETYS Universidad, from Mexico, 75-51 on Friday. Yvonte Neal led Cochise with 20 points, Johnishia Welles followed with 13, Ashley Mitchell had 11 and Tianna Brown had 10.

On Saturday, Cochise ran its record to 7-0 with a 79-51 win over Lake Region College from North Dakota. Mitchell led with 16 points, Welles had 15, Madison Lopez had 14 and Neal finished with 12.

“They were fourth in the nation in scoring at 85 points per game, so I’m very happy we were able to hold them to 51,” Cochise head coach Laura Hughes said of Lake Region College. “We came out with a lot of energy; we had people really working on the defensive end.”

Cochise next faces South Mountain in Phoenix on Wednesday. The Cougars are ranked 24th in the NJCAA Division II poll.

The Apaches are then home at the Douglas Campus on Dec. 1 against Mesa and Dec. 5 against Eastern Arizona. Game time both days is 5:30 p.m. Admission is free to all regular-season home games.
