COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — The 2012-13 Academic Student-Athlete Awards and Academic Teams of the Year were announced Tuesday by the NJCAA, with one Cochise College athlete and three Apache teams recognized.

Valerie Buckway, a guard for the women’s basketball team, was one of 592 student-athletes who met the standard for Superior Academic Achievement, awarded to those with a GPA of 3.8 or better.

Academic team accolades are awarded to those with a team GPA of 3.0 or better. The Cochise men’s basketball team earned a 3.22 GPA for the year, while women’s basketball and baseball teams were each listed with a 3.09 GPA.

The 2012-13 academic year marks the 30th straight season the NJCAA has recognized the success of student-athletes in the classroom. With minimal changes, the NJCAA academic awards program has been in place since 1983.
