DOUGLAS — The Cochise College women’s basketball team opened conference play with a 71-65 win over South Mountain on Wednesday.
Te Oramae Solomon led Cochise with 18 points, Aja Hoyle scored 15, Destiny Amezquita and Tianna Brown had 11 apiece, and Jessica Almeida had 10.
“It was a tight game,” Cochise head coach Laura Hughes told the Sierra Vista Herald. “We were up by 10 with 10 minutes to go and held it at 5 or 6 the rest of the game. We made all of our free throws at the end.”
On Saturday, Cochise takes a 2-1 record to Mesa Community College, the top team in the nation in Division II.
“They’ve got four or five starters back and they’re a very solid defensive team,” Hughes said. “They play well together and scoring against them will be the most challenging part for us.”
Cochise then heads to Eastern Arizona on Wednesday, then returns home Nov. 23 against Tohono O’odham for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff. Admission is free to all regular-season home games.
