rodeo fortThe Cochise College rodeo team opens the spring portion of the season with its annual home rodeo on Fort Huachuca, set for March 1-2 at Wren Arena.

Advance tickets are on sale (cash only) at the college’s Sierra Vista and Douglas campuses. In Sierra Vista, get tickets at the front desk of the Administration/500 Building. On the Douglas Campus, they’re available at the athletics office, located in Stronghold Gymnasium on the east side of campus.

Advance tickets cost $7 for one-day admittance. Tickets at the gate will cost $8 apiece. Children under 5 years old and active-duty military are admitted to the rodeo for free.

On March 1, gates open at noon and the rodeo performance starts at 1 p.m. College rodeo events include bareback riding, tie-down roping, team roping, saddle bronc riding, steer wrestling, bull riding, breakaway roping, barrel racing and goat tying. Competing teams are from colleges and universities across Arizona and New Mexico.

On March 2, Cowboy Church begins at 10 a.m., followed by the Exceptional Rodeo at 10:30. The Exceptional Rodeo is a mock rodeo that pairs college competitors with special needs children to guide them through rodeo events and give them a taste of the wild west. Gates officially open at noon for the 1 p.m. rodeo performance.

On both days, Barney’s Backyard Barnyard Petting Zoo is open from noon to 3 p.m.

Cochise College’s rodeo athletes are among the leaders in the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association’s Grand Canyon Region standings heading into the spring season. The Cochise women are second in the region with 1,180 points, just behind Central Arizona College. The Cochise men’s team is fifth.
