DOUGLAS – Cochise College men’s and women’s basketball players were named to this year’s all-conference and all-region basketball teams, announced this weekend.
Sophomores Nathan Sobey and Michael Maya were listed as part of the First Team All-Conference and First Team Division I All-Region, while Cochise sophomore Matt Korcheck made Second Team All-Conference and Second Team Division I All-Region.
In addition, Cochise men’s basketball head coach Jerry Carrillo was recognized as the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference Coach of the Year.
Cochise freshmen Ashley Mitchell and Johnishia Welles were each named to the Second Team All-Conference. Mitchell was listed as First Team Division I All-Region, while Welles made the Second Team Division I All-Region.
Both Apache teams begin play in the National Junior College Athletic Association Region I Tournament this week.
The Cochise women are seeded third and travel to No. 2 Arizona Western for a 7:30 p.m. game on Wednesday. Watch the semifinal game live via the Matador Sports Network.
The top-seeded Cochise men, which moved up to No. 16 in the NJCAA Division I national poll on Tuesday, host fourth-seeded Central Arizona at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Douglas Campus. Admission is $5 for adults, while kids under 12 are free. Students can get into the game free with a Cochise College ID; without an ID is $3.
