Sports PhotoDouglas, AZ —The Cochise men’s basketball team get their fifth straight win against South Mountain Community College on Wednesday night, 97-83. The Apaches showdown with the Cougars was a highly anticipant matchup. Cochise got off to a great start, leading 14-2 early on.

The Apaches continued their great play, extending the lead to 20 with 4:12 left in the first half. South Mountain made a few plays, cutting into the lead; however Cochise led by 15 at halftime. After intermission, the best the Cougars could do is close the gap to eight points with 6 minutes left to play.

Over the next few minutes, the Apaches were able to get back-to-back stops, with Arell Henning knocking down consecutive 3-point jumpers. Henning’s led the Apache with 26 points, 4 assists, and 5 rebounds.

Chaz Mack finished the game with 20 points and 13 rebounds.

Jawan Stepney had a very effective night, shooting 7-11 from the field, and ending the game with 17 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals.

Head Coach Jerry Carrillo told our sideline reporter, “I am pleased with our win. We put a lot of time into being ready for South Mountain. This team has a chance to do something special and we will take another step in that direction Friday at 2 and prepared for a very good Phoenix College team.”

The Apaches will play its second home game in a row Saturday, January 9th against the Bears of Phoenix College. Tip-off will be at 7:30 p.m
