The Cochise College women’s soccer team won its third straight game over the weekend, beating Scottsdale 2-1 on Sept. 12 and Mesa 2-1 in overtime on Sept. 14.
In both games, the Apaches rallied late to secure the wins. At Scottsdale, the Artichokes scored in the 70th minute, but Cochise answered 10 minutes later with a goal by Brooke Madden, assisted by Talya De Leon. In the 82nd minute, Jennifer Calanche put the Apaches ahead to stay with an assist by Mariel Hundley.
On Saturday, Mesa scored in the first two minutes of the game. After the break, Ivonne Cisneros tied it in the 47th minute and the teams went into overtime, consisting of two 10-minute halves with golden goal rules. With 17 seconds left in OT, De Leon put a shot in the back of the net, assisted by Calanche, to give Cochise the win.
“I’m very proud of the girls and their ability to stay focused, get it done and finish the game on top,” said Cochise head coach Andrea Daniels.
Prior to Saturday’s game at Douglas High School, Cochise soccer players volunteered at the Douglas Youth Soccer League opening ceremony. Current Cochise players Carley Acosta and Kim Cormier, pictured at left, were recognized as former Douglas AYSL players.
“We celebrated 37 teams and then were honored with completing the opening kickoff,” Daniels said.
The wins improve Cochise’s record to 6-2 heading into Wednesday’s home game against Arizona Western, to be played on Fort Huachuca at Bujalski Track and Field Complex, located next to Barnes Field House.
Admission is free to all regular-season home games.
