DOUGLAS — The Cochise College baseball team swept Arizona Western in Tuesday’s doubleheader on the Douglas Campus, winning the first game 8-6 and the second 6-2.
Zach Rodgers pitched the complete game in the opener, then Steven Naemark went all nine in the late game and gave up no earned runs while allowing eight hits, striking out four and walking one.
“I felt I struggled a little through the first few innings, but I found my groove and stuck with it,” Naemark told the Sierra Vista Herald. “You’re always worried at the start of the second game that you’ll lose your momentum, so my approach is coming in and going at it like it’s the first pitch of the first game, giving everything, and making sure I stay focused.”
The Apaches jumped on the board first in both games. Game one was close until the end, but in game two, Cochise built a five-run cushion through five innings before Western managed to score on a two-out error.
Cochise is 25-9 on the season heading into Saturday’s game against Gateway on the Douglas Campus. The doubleheader begins at noon. Admission is free to all regular-season home games.
