Cochise College will embrace the past and celebrate the future at the Douglas Campus during an open house scheduled for 1-3 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 26.

The college is finishing projects identified as short-term needs as part of its master facilities plan. The Douglas Campus piece of the plan includes renovations to student services and a classroom building, as well as construction of a new Science Building, Career Technical Education Building, and Housing and Student Life Complex.

Significant work is complete, with some facilities occupied beginning last summer and others opening just prior to the open house celebration. The soccer field also was widened in advance of the fall season, and electrical and heating and cooling improvements have been implemented. The cost of the projects was covered by college reserves, revenue bonds, and pledged revenue bonds.

Students have been attending classes in a new Career Technical Education Building at the Douglas Campus since August.

The open house celebration is open to the public. It will include a brief ceremony and tours of the student services, student life, residence, career tech and science facilities. Various departments, including music, nursing, welding, art, building construction technology, and career services, will give demonstrations. Food will be prepared by the culinary arts program.

Dr. Jack Ziegler, author of “A Brave Beginning” and “A Brave New World,” historical books about Cochise College, will make a special appearance at 12:10 p.m. in the Student Union, where he’ll present a free lecture about the early years of the college. Ziegler’s presentation is sponsored by the Center for Lifelong Learning.

An open house also is being planned for the Sierra Vista Campus in February.

The event is free and open to the public. For more information, call (520) 417-4148. Anyone needing an accommodation in order to attend should contact the Disability Services Office, (520) 515-5337 or (520) 417-4023, at least 72 hours in advance.
