The 21st of September marked a special milestone for Cochise College as we celebrate the 60th anniversary of the first day of class. On that day in 1964, expectations were exceeded when new faculty, like Joe Gilliland, eagerly welcomed over 400 students to the Douglas Campus.

As we look back and reflect on the past 60 years, we celebrate and honor the vision of our founders. In researching the college archives, I came across the first academic catalog and several Douglas Dispatch articles from the 1960s. The founders’ objectives were clear – to provide students with educational opportunities to prepare them for careers and to meet community needs. Dr. William B. Harwood, the college president at the time, outlined the college philosophy: “A junior college must assist individuals in the community to attain levels and types of leadership and responsibility commensurate with their potential and with community needs.”

One of the Douglas Dispatch articles contained a quote from Dr. George Spikes, appointed to the first governing board and member of the Cochise College Hall of Fame, saying, “Let us not forget opening the doors marks the beginning, not the end. We have in our grasp the opportunity to develop a truly outstanding institution of higher learning that can benefit us by enriching our lives and educating our children.”

Sixty years ago, Cochise College opened its doors with the goal of providing accessible education. Today, education at Cochise College is more than earning a degree or certificate – it’s about inspiring passion, creating purpose, and preparing individuals for meaningful careers that enhance our communities. We believe in the power of education to open doors of opportunity.

The founders’ vision for Cochise College was and remains deeply rooted in a commitment to the community. After all, community is our middle name. Many community members and supporters still remember those early years, and their stories remind us of Cochise College’s lasting impact on students and the county we serve. What began with over 4oo students has evolved into a community college that now serves nearly 10,000 students. While the college has expanded its academic offerings and reach, our “why” remains unchanged. Cochise College has always been a place where students can open doors to reach their potential.

Students and community members are encouraged to share their Cochise College stories as they visit one of the campuses or centers. We invite you to join us in celebrating 60 years of providing access to higher education and enhancing our community. This milestone reflects the combined efforts of everyone who has shaped Cochise College into what it is today.
