COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa — The NJCAA Men’s Basketball Coaches Association hosted a national recruiting showcase in Council Bluffs, IA last week in what is known as the “NJCAA Rising All-Stars” event. Cochise College Men’s Basketball was well-represented as head coach Jerry Carrillo was invited to lead one of the six teams competing in the showcase. Along with Coach Carrillo were three Cochise standout returners Jordan Hernandez, Jalen Barbee, and Tracy Godfrey Jr. According to Coach Carrillo, the event featured 60 upcoming Sophomores from all over the country and was by invitation only. The showcase was held at Reiver Arena, home of Iowa Western Community College.
The Rising Stars event began on July 14th and concluded on July 16th with Coach Carrillo’s team finishing with two wins and one loss.
In Game 1, Team Carrillo defeated Team Cochran 117-75 with Jalen Barbee leading all scorers with 31 points. The sophomore also finished the first game with 14 rebounds and one steal. Game 2 saw Coach Carrillo’s team defeat team McKinney in a close 85-78 back-and-forth affair. Jordan Hernandez led the team with 7 assists and scored 6 points of his own. Team Carrillo concluded the event with a loss to Team Marquis on July 16th falling 71-85. Barbee finished the game with four points and four rebounds, Hernandez had 7 assists with three rebounds, and Tracy Godfrey finished with 9 points and two rebounds.
