Douglas, AZ — Cochise College women’s basketball team came up just short of making “Sophomore Night” a special one, losing to Central Arizona 71-69. Jordyn Penniman had 20 points and 4 assists, while Sophia Elenga notched 16 points, 14 rebounds and 1 block. Tatyana McFarland collected 8 points, 6 rebounds and 1 block, plus Arianna Anderson and Coulter Bowlen each pulled down 7 rebounds.
In a tough and physical matchup, Cochise beat Central Arizona on the boards 46-37, but only shot 38% to the visitors’ 39% shooting. However, Central Arizona picked 14 steals from Cochise’s 23 turnovers and went on a key 27-15 run in the second quarter to increase its halftime lead to 41-33. The game came down to Taylor Harris being fouled with 2.4 seconds left and having to intentionally miss her second free-throw attempt, which led to Anderson recovering the loose ball. Anderson’s shot, which would have tied the game, bounced on the rim twice and fell out of the basket as time expired.
The defeat takes Cochise to a 22-7 overall record and 16-4 conference mark. Next up is a road game versus Glendale College on Tuesday, February 23rd at 5:30pm.
