Las Vegas, NV — IMG_1462The first week of the season was a tough hit for the Cochise College baseball team. The Apaches lost four games against Western Nevada in Las Vegas.

In the first game, Western Nevada took the lead in the seventh inning, and Cochise College Apaches were unable to muster a comeback, losing 6-4 on Thursday.

 

In their second game, Cochise College Apaches lost 5-2 in seven innings despite outhitting Western Nevada six to four.

Western Nevada closer Casey Cornwell put away the final three outs to record the save. Western Nevada stayed on top until the final out after taking the lead in the fifth, scoring five runs on two doubles.

Two runs in the top of the seventh helped Cochise College Apaches close its deficit to 5-2. A sacrifice fly by Julian Fernandez and an RBI single by Max Draijer fueled Cochise College Apaches’ comeback. Finally, Cornwell got Luis Hidalgo to fly out to end the game.

In their third game, Cochise lost 6-3 in seven innings, despite outhitting Western Nevada three to two.

After pushing across three runs in the top of the third, Cochise College Apaches faced just a 6-3 deficit. A walk by Adam De La Cruz and a two-run error gave Cochise College Apaches life. Finally, Mill got Richard Zapata to strike out to end the threat.

In their final game, Western Nevada defeated Cochise College Apaches, 9-6. Abel Avitia did his best to change the outcome, but Avitia couldn’t pilot Cochise College.

Up next, the Apaches face Col. Northwestern (DH) in a home game on Friday, Feb. 12. The game starts at 12 p.m.
