DOUGLAS, Ariz. — Three Cochise College Baseball sophomores will be heading to the next level next fall as Infielder Mathis Muerant, Pitcher Alex Figueroa, and Catcher Mason Wray signed their National Letters of Intent during National Signing Day last week. The three sophomores will be heading to the NCAA Division I level at the conclusion of their spring season at Cochise College.
Mathis Meurant, Infielder, University of Arizona
Meurant, a sophomore from Vaires sur-Marne, France, signed his letter of intent to the University of Arizona. The sophomore collected 56 hits in 170 at-bats in 2023 for an overall batting average of .329 and also tallied 10 stolen bases in 12 attempts. Meurant was the starting shortstop for Cochise for the majority of the 2023 season, he managed to collect 108 put-outs in 145 total chances and had an overall fielding percentage of .910.
Alex Figueroa, Pitcher, Utah Valley University
Figueroa signed his letter of intent to Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah. The right-handed pitcher is a graduate of Catalina Foothills High School in Tucson, Arizona, and will return for his sophomore season with Cochise in the Spring. Figueroa made 18 appearances on the mound last season pitching a total of 26.1 innings with a total of 32 strikeouts and 12 walks. Figueroa had an earned run average of 4.78 in 2023, along with a WHIP (Walks, hits, and innings pitched) of 1.25.
Mason Wray, Catcher, Northwestern State University
In 2023, Wray came to Cochise College as a transfer from Colorado State-Mesa University. The sophomore catcher is from Melbourne, Australia, and signed his letter of intent last week to Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, Lousiana. During the 2023 season, Wray made 71 plate appearances for the Apaches and collected 14 hits, including five doubles in 65 at-bats for a batting average of .215. Defensively as a catcher, Wray had a total of 218 put-outs in 225 total chances, had an overall fielding percentage of .982, and managed to catch 11 runners stealing from behind the plate.
