DOUGLAS — The Cochise College baseball team split its doubleheader against Mesa Community College on Saturday, falling 2-0 in game one and winning game two 3-2.
Mesa’s Joseph Carvalho threw a no-hitter for Mesa in the first game. He struck out nine Cochise batters and allowed two walks. On the mound for the Apaches, Darick Hall went all seven innings and allowed just six hits, one earned run and no walks while striking out three.
Kade Wagner pitched a gem for Cochise in game two, finishing with 10 strikeouts while allowing just four hits and no walks in the complete game. Mesa jumped on top with a run in the second, but Cochise answered with three in the bottom of the third on an RBI single by Nate Stepna, a groundout to second by Hall that scored Bryan Nunez, and a wild pitch that scored Stepna.
The Apaches are 18-6 overall and 10-2 in conference play heading into the annual Phoenix Area Juco Spring Classic this week. Cochise will face Pima, Northeastern, Scottsdale, Chandler-Gilbert and Western Nebraska.
