PHOENIX — The Cochise College baseball team won one and lost one against South Mountain on Tuesday, edging the Cougars in the early game 3-2 before falling 8-7 in the late afternoon.
In game one, Cochise scored in the first inning on a RBI double to centerfield by Darick Hall. The Apaches padded their lead in the fourth when a Nick Borowski single to left scored Charlie Ameer from second, and Jackson Overlund’s single to right scored Borowski.
South Mountain scored on a solo home run in the fourth and on a Cochise error in the sixth. Hall earned the win on the mound, allowing just four hits and two walks in 5 2/3 innings. Adam De La Cruz picked up the save.
In game two, Cochise jumped out to an early lead with five runs in the first three innings, but South Mountain scored four in the third and four more in the fifth, and Cochise’s eighth-inning rally fell short.
At the plate for Cochise, Hall was 3 for 5 with a two-run home run in the first inning, Ameer was 2 for 3 with a double in the third, and Louis Boyd was 2 for 5 with an RBI and two runs scored.
Although Cochise outhit South Mountain, the Apaches committed six errors in the game. Borowski was on the mound for all eight runs, but only three were earned. Juan Aguilera went the last 3 2/3, allowing no hits and just two walks while striking out four.
The Apaches are 41-13 overall this season and and 26-8 in conference play. Cochise closes the regular season Saturday at home on the Douglas Campus with a noon doubleheader against Central Arizona College, a team the Apaches swept earlier this season. Admission to the game is free.
