IMG_1765DOUGLAS — The Cochise College baseball team swept Chandler-Gilbert Community College in Saturday’s doubleheader on the Douglas Campus, winning the first game 4-3 in extra innings and cruising in game two to a 10-0 win.

In the first game, Charlie Ameer’s bases-loaded hit to left scored Nate Stepna to win it in the bottom of the 10th inning. Ameer was 2 for 5 in the game, Dan Hetzel was 2 for 4 with a home run, and Bryan Nunez was 2 for 4 with a triple and a run scored.

Adam De La Cruz was the winning pitcher, going the final three innings and allowing no runs, a hit and three walks while striking out two.

In game two, the Apaches scored six runs in the sixth inning and took advantage of Chandler-Gilbert’s four errors in the game to get the win. Jackson Overlund was 3 for 3 with an RBI and two runs scored, Ameer was 2 for 3 with a double, Stepna hit two doubles, and Hetzel had a three-run home run in the fifth.

Tyler Fallwell went all six innings to get the win, giving up just one hit and walking five while striking out four in the shutout.

Cochise is 35-9 overall this season and 20-4 in conference play heading into Tuesday’s games at Gateway and Saturday’s games at Eastern Arizona. The Apaches return home Tuesday, April 14 for a noon doubleheader against Arizona Western College. Admission is free to all regular-season home games.
