The Cochise College women’s soccer closed the season with a road victory against Glendale Community College, 2-0, on Saturday.

Cochise scored off a penalty kick, taken by Kristina Hernandez, after a Glendale opponent was called for a handball in the box late in the game. Hernandez then scored the Apaches’ insurance goal unassisted.

Glendale put strong pressure on Cochise for the first 20 minutes of the game, but five tough Gaucho shots were scooped up by sophomore goalie Justine Padilla, helping her team finish the year with a 7-11-1 record.

“She really had a strong game to end her career here at Cochise College,” said Cochise head coach Andrea Daniels. “Justine was there to close all those scoring opportunities down.”

A day earlier, the soccer team traveled up the road to Palominas Elementary School after practice for Red Ribbon Week, an annual event that promotes drug awareness education. On Friday afternoon, the Apaches ate lunch and went to recess with the young students to help show them the healthy options that await if they stay drug free.

“The girls do so well with working with the kids,” Daniels said. “We also got to hand out honor awards. The team had a blast!”
