Approximately 150 fans showed up to watch the Cochise Apaches take on the Gateway Geckos in the rain on Aug. 31. The match was the first home game under the lights at the Cyr soccer complex in Sierra Vista.
The Apaches started slow, conceding a goal in the 5th minute of the match. Arieanna Arreola Palomares found a ball behind Sofia Gallegos, passing the ball into the back of the net. Cochise responded two minutes later when Kayla Reynaud (Las Cruces, NM) struck a ball from 40 yards out, catching the Geckos goalkeeper off her line. In the 10th minute Maria Azarias (Santa Catarina, Brazil) received a perfectly placed through ball from Ivana Siles (La, Paz, Bolivia), which was sent into the back of the net from 17 yards out to make it 2:1. Jaclyn Madrid (Sierra Vista, AZ) rounded out the goals in the first half with a 37th-minute strike. The goal came off a corner kick taken by Megan Castricum (Castricum, Netherlands). The halftime score was 3:1 for the Apaches.
Cochise carried their momentum from the first half into the second. In the 54th minute, Maria Azarias passed to Megan Castricum via an indirect kick to make it 4:1. Maria Azarias added another assist in the 59th minute when she found Daniela Gomez (Cali, Colombia) from the corner kick to establish a final score of 5:1.
Goalkeeper Victoria Maxwell recorded the win making 4 saves on 5 shots.
The win improves the record for Cochise Soccer to 2-0.
