Cochise College Soccer showcases offensive firepower against Glendale College. The Apaches finished with ten goals this week after their 6-1 win over the Gauchos. Cochise took the lead in the eighth minute when Sofia Gallegos delivered a through ball to Maria Azarias, who finished the chance and set the game’s tone. In the 20th minute, it was again Azarias who received a backheel flick from Kayla Reynaud from Las Cruces, NM, and made a move around two defenders, placing the ball in the corner of the net. The Apaches were able to control possession for much of the game, which resulted in another goal in the first half. Daniela Gomez from Cali, Columbia, scored her first goal of the season in the 22nd minute after an assist from Clara Steffensen from Hvidovre, Denmark. Gauchos countered with a goal in the 32nd minute by Isabel Ortiz. The halftime score was 3-1. 

The second half brought another three goals from Apaches. Azarias found the net two more times, the first time in the 51st minute after an assist from the goalkeeper Samantha Renteria from Rio Rico, AZ. The second time in the 65th minute after a cross from Steffensen. The last goal came from Daniela Gomez in the 82nd minute after assists from Azarias and Sanne Croes from Ambt Delden, Netherlands.

Thanks to her goals in the past two games, Azarias is amongst the top three scorers in the NJCAA Division I and a leading scorer in ACCAC. Steffensen is in ninth place for assists, and goalkeeper Brianna Guzman from Douglas, AZhas the most saves in the NJCAA Division I. 

Maria Azarias picked up the ACCAC player of the week award, and Samantha Renteria was named ACCAC keeper of the week.

The win improves Apaches’ record to 2-1 in ACCAC. 

Cochise Soccer will be back on the road to face Scottsdale College on Saturday, April 17, at 6 p.m.
