Cochise College was named the Business of the Year at the Bisbee Chamber of Commerce’s annual meeting and dinner Friday, March 26. The college was selected for providing excellent service to the chamber and the community during 2009.

According to the award selection committee, the college’s activities in the Bisbee area reflect its mission to provide accessible education opportunities that are responsive to a diverse population and lead to constructive citizenship, meaningful careers and lifelong learning. During 2009, the college provided classes at locations around town, including at the high school, chamber of commerce, Boys & Girls Club, the county complex and online. Participants of all ages attended the classes.

Cochise College staff and faculty members also volunteer numerous hours assisting community programs at the Copper Queen Library, Bisbee Mining Museum, Bisbee Chamber of Commerce, Central School Project, Bisbee Senior Center, Bisbee Boys & Girls Club, Warren Ball Park and many more.  Its employees also participate in events such as the Bisbee Car Show, Bisbee 1000 Stair Climb, Mule Mountain Relay for Life, Brewery Gulch Daze, and the Bisbee Blues Festival.

“This organization sets an example of active participation in the local community,” the committee noted.

The committee also cited the higher education degrees and certificates available in many fields that are suitable for career changers and those seeking to upgrade their skills, and a number of businesses also benefited from business consulting and outreach programs designed to help them succeed in the current economy.

Finally, the college offers numerous opportunities for Bisbee-area and Cochise County residents of all ages and backgrounds to pursue affordable continuing education, personal enrichment and recreational activities that enhance the local quality of life and embrace the idea that it is never too late to learn.
