The primary property tax rate for Cochise College and the FY11 budget will be among the subjects of a public hearing and meeting of the Cochise College Governing Board June 8 at the Sierra Vista Campus.
The primary property tax rate for Cochise College will be reduced from 1.6075 to 1.5984 for the FY11 budget. This represents the fourth consecutive year that the college’s rate has declined. Arizona statutes cap the amount of tax dollar increase that Cochise College may levy at 2 percent of the net assessed value of existing property per year. This cap is used to determine the rate, which may also be applied to the value of new construction. The college will recommend to its Governing Board to increase its levy to the statutory limit. While other taxing authorities may not be limited in such a manner, the levy cap causes the rate at which Cochise College is able to tax to decline.
In compliance with section 15-1461.01, Arizona Revised Statutes, Cochise County Community College District is notifying property taxpayers of its intention to raise its primary property taxes over last year’s level. The district is proposing an increase of $326,473 or 2 percent. The proposed tax increase will cause the district’s primary property taxes on a $100,000 home to increase from $156.71 (total taxes that would be owed without the proposed tax increase) to $159.84 (total proposed taxes including the tax increase).
This proposed increase is exclusive of increased primary property taxes received from new construction. The increase is also exclusive of any changes that may occur from property tax levies for voter approved bonded indebtedness or budget and tax overrides.
All interested citizens are invited to attend the public hearing on the tax increase that is scheduled to be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 8 in the Horace Steele Conference Room in the Andrea Cracchiolo Library at the Sierra Vista Campus, 901 N. Colombo Ave., Sierra Vista. Anyone needing an accommodation in order to attend should contact the Disability Services Office, (520) 515-5337 or (520) 417-4023, at least 72 hours in advance.
