Former Cochise standout pitcher Xavier Altamirano, now playing at Oral Roberts University, was last week’s Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week, announced by Collegiate Baseball, and earned his first Summit League Pitcher of the Week honors.

The junior right-hander recorded 14 strikeouts in a 4-3 win against North Dakota State last Sunday and allowed just one hit in seven innings of work with no walks and two runs, both unearned. His 14 strikeouts were the most by an Oral Roberts pitcher since Jerry Sullivan in 2009.

The Douglas native transferred to Division I Oral Roberts in Tulsa, Okla., at the end of last year after two standout seasons with Cochise, during which he helped lead the Apaches to back-to-back Western District titles and NJCAA World Series appearances.
